I'm so happy sometimes to have old, falling apart, scratched-up furniture. If I had expensive furniture, then I'd get upset whenever my cats scratched things. I think my cats also love my cheap, old furniture. They have freedom to scratch whatever they feel like scratching. They love scratching some of my furniture, in addition to their scratching posts.
